In the 1890’s one of the greatest tarantula collectors in history set forth down the Pacific coast of Mexico, braving brigands to collect spiders and insects for the British Museum of Natural History. Following in his footsteps 130 years later, Andrew Smith and his field team rediscovered Smith’s original type sites – the brigands having been replaced by the new menace of the drug cartels.
